5 LESSONS FROM BREAKING BAD !

For me, Breaking Bad is a masterpiece in execution. The creators (Vince Gilligan & team), very brilliantly, executed a simple plot and turned Walter White aka Heisenberg in to a household name. I am not writing this post to describe the show but to put together 5 lessons that I learned from the series and if you ask me, each and everyone of us can learn these lessons and can put to practice in our daily lives –

As resilient as Walter White -  There was a classic NEVER GIVE-UP lesson that was on fully display throughout the show. Walter White faced numerous obstacles while building the meth business but whenever his back was against the wall, he always used his resilience,  mindset and a sharp presence of mind to come up with a magic bullet and always got the better of the situation. Now we can question the ways and means of finding the solution, which were mostly illegal but what i want you all to take away is to develop that resilience and never give-up attitude that Walter White had and if used in the right way, the possibilities in our daily lives can be infinite.

As calm as Gus Fring -  The body language that Mr. Fring displayed throughout the show was an epitome of cool, calm & collected. The episode where he takes revenge by killing the entire cattle at once and still being in his trademark cool demeanour still send shivers down my spine. It can be a dream come true for anybody to achieve that level of calmness and composure in one's lives but i believe this is what we should be aiming for. I am personally working on this trait and we can achieve this by training our mind to act & react in every situation the way we want. Life is uncertain & random; we can't change it but what we can do is try mastering the psychology of our brain so that we are able to think clearly and take decisive action under pressure.

Greed in the end fails, even the greedy - The way it ended for Walter White, proves once again that the desire to want anything in excess is bad, be it for money or for anything else in life. This lesson particularly holds true for that 'quintessential investor' in every one of us. We usually tend to go overboard on our decisions regarding investments. Also, we have a tendency to not to think twice while accumulating materialistic possessions, which many times, we don't need, thereby overspending. Let's safeguard against these vices and our lives will be just alright. As Socrates said " He who us not contented with what he has, would not be contented with what he would like to have"

What it means to be a man - This is one of my personal favourites. If we can remember the scene when Gus is trying to convince Walter White to work for him and produce meth (If this scene would have been in any other web series then it would have been one of the greatest scenes for that web series but being Breaking Bad, this was just another scene and that reminds us on how iconic Breaking Bad was). This is not a lesson per se but highlights the significance of being a MAN. " A man provides for his family. When you have children you always have a family. They will always be your priority, your responsibility. And a man..a man provides. And he does it even if he's not appreciated or respected or even loved. He simply bears it up and he does it because he's a man" . Don't forget to watch that clip in the link below

La Familia lo es todo  - This is the premise on which everything was set in motion in the show. When translated from Spanish, it means FAMILY IS EVERYTHING and they cannot and should not be taken for granted. Do i need to say anything more. I would like each and everyone of you to watch this clip in the link below

These are the 5 lessons that i took from this awe-inspiring show and i hope and believe that these lessons are something we can learn and relate to our daily lives. Do let me know your view on this. I'm always open for a good conversation.

TO ADAPT IS THE NEW NORMAL

Presently, the majority of us would be unaware of today's date and day. Such are the times. Each day is getting dragged monotonously, not only for those people who are not working from home but also for people who are doing meaningless (mostly) and stressful work from their homes. Right now, we are experiencing the most uncertain times in the history of mankind and merely ‘binge watching’ on Netflix won’t ease the pain of being confined to our homes 24*7. We are still looking at another month or 2 of lockdown ahead of us. So, how do we cope? I have come-up with a couple of ideas from my own experience of being isolated since last 2 months - 1. Stop ‘over-thinking’ & worrying. This will take us nowhere; rather it will make matters worse. How do we distract our minds then? I would suggest setting yourself in some sort of a routine in the weekdays (From Monday – Friday) – like getting up every morning at the same time and doing similar activities through out the day an...

Reflections: 26/11 and beyond

The first anniversary of the Mumbai terror attacks is slowly approaching and it’s a good time to introspect and take stock of the situation. On 26 th November last year, despite all the warnings and intelligence reports of an attack in any form, Mumbai was attacked by ten terrorists who took the easy way inside our territory- the sea. I don’t think anyone anywhere alive on that day will ever forget the shock and agony that struck and gripped Mumbai for more than 78 hours and permanently etched a terror scar on India. Even though we mourn the deaths of so many innocent people during the attacks, this dark incident has touched every Indian. But what about our response? It has been cold, naïve and irresponsible. The Indian government’s response to 26/11 has been woefully inept and shoddy. We still have not succeeded in putting more international pressure on Pakistan to bring the perpetrators to book. The AJMAL KASAB hangover is still looming large on us. We keep on sending dossiers...

An ENIGMA called pArEnTs !

For me and my own image as one of the boys, it has been a fulfilling experience so far. I have been extremely lucky to be born in the family which I am now. My class- which tells me and more often reminds me the expectations that society around me has. A sacred pact- that tells me, that I can have a house, a car, access to higher education, good meals, a warm bed to sleep on with- it is something that more than half of the population can only dream of. In return, I have to behave myself, act like what my parents wants, constantly think about the societal pressures, pretend that I have no desires, can’t smoke and drink at my own will, can't even be seen buying them, can’t decide which higher education to go for, cant fall in love with a female from a different community and can’t live and enjoy life on my own terms. This wonderful symbiosis is well explained by my upper middle class parents. Any threat to their respect and status in the society is seriously taken. And when things go...
